What is eLearning?

In this post, we’re going to explain everything you need to know about eLearning and how it can be used for your business. eLearning is a term used to describe the delivery of training materials through an electronic or digital format. Typically, eLearnings are developed and utilized through a desktop, laptop, mobile device or tablet. An eLearning is typically a course module that it will be broken down into somewhere between five to 20 minutes of content, giving that learner the ability to access some training materials on their own time. What’s nice about eLearning is that it can impact the entire employee life cycle.

Starting with onboarding, it can provide a new hire an introduction into what that organization’s culture looks like as well as what they can expect walking into the job on their first day.

From a technical and safety training standpoint, it can give high burse of information to teach them what they can expect when they’re performing their job for the first time and continuing through their career path development. And lastly, on that leadership and soft skills side, potentially giving them high level information on what to expect, how to handle a difficult conversation, maybe even something like deescalating a conflict or a difficult scenario. (bright upbeat music) eLearning plays great into the blended learning approach where you tie eLearnings to other training modalities, such as instructor-led training, virtual and augmented reality as well as on the job or shadow training. What is nice about eLearning is the fact that it gives the learner the ability to take trainings outside of the workspace, be able to do that asynchronous learning where they can do it on their own time.

But again, it also kind of ties it into a larger program where they can do some pre, post-work and follow-ups as well. So for this, I’d like to use an example and we’ll talk about a three-day in-person leadership program.

ELearning can be utilized as that pre or post-work to each of the days, giving a high level overview of what will be covered and then also can be utilized as some homework to go over what was covered in that previous session. We wanna make sure that it’s very short and kind of high level information, but we wanna make sure that this is also being utilized so the learner will have a good idea of what to expect going in into this program.

(bright upbeat music) eLearning is a very dynamic learning modality due to the fact that you can utilize so many different tools that are out there, ranging from pre-recorded videos to onscreen animation, gamification, and knowledge checks.

At the end of the day, we’re trying to utilize all these tools to mimic your culture and ensure that the learner is getting the best experience and you are meeting your learning objectives. (bright upbeat music) When it comes to eLearning, there are two different types of eLearning. One is off the shelf and the other is custom-built. One is not right, and one is not wrong, there’s just a different use case for both of them. When we’re talking about off the shelf, you can get it in a very quick turnaround time but you’re not really infusing your culture.

It could be utilized for a standardized certification process or maybe a compliance course, something very high level information that it doesn’t really have to differentiate yourself from others. Your other option when it comes to eLearning is custom content. What differentiates custom content from off the shelf is now you can really infuse your company’s culture, your branding guidelines, your colours, and you can really make this a differentiator between yourself and your competitors. We can utilize your policies, procedures, and processes whereas that off the shelf content is just overarching principles. Another great benefit of custom eLearning is that as a program manager, you now have full autonomy over the level of interactivity and engagement of this program.

Whether we would be including knowledge checks with matching, multiple choice or drag and drops, all the way to creating a branch learning approach where that learner can now go through and kind of make their own adventure or path.

When it comes to the price for eLearning on the off the shelf side, it comes down to two factors. How many, and when? Well, there’s how many number of users will be going through this content and how often will they be utilizing it? It’s typically on a month to month license but it could be also on a yearly license as well.

On the custom side, there really is no one answer for how much this will cost. There are so many variables that go into a custom eLearning course, whether it be the level of engagement and interactivity, to the number of animations and illustrations, custom motion graphics, voiceover talents, knowledge checks, and assessments, the options are endless.

At the end of the day as an organization, what it comes down to is finding that right partner to walk you through the development process. What the differentiators are between these three is really comes down to the level of interactivity and engagement of the content.

And if you’re only trying to get some high-level information out, just a very brief overarching principle, you’ll lean more towards that level one where there’s not as much interactivity and engagement in the course, but if you’re looking to do something very custom, very engaging for your learners, where they’re gonna have to maybe work through a specific process that your organization has, that’s when we’ll lean more towards that level two and level three, bringing in a lot more animations, illustrations and graphics.
